In Chinese medicine, the ping ren: the balanced, healthy person taken as the diagnostic baseline. The Neijing defines the ping ren as one who is not ill (平人者,不病也), whose respiration and pulse keep an even rhythm. The physician compares a patient against this norm to judge the presence and degree of disease.
