In Chinese medicine, the intangible, highly active and continuously moving substance that constitutes the body and sustains its vital activities. The Neijing holds that human life is formed from the qi of heaven and earth and completed in accordance with the four seasons. Dispersed across many chapters, qi appears in specialized forms (zang-fu qi, nutritive and defensive qi, ancestral qi, source qi) with functions including promotion, warming, defense, containment and transformation.
