In the cold-damage (Shanghan) tradition, Taiyang disease (太阳病) is the first of the six-meridian (liu jing) disease-categories in Zhang Zhongjing's Treatise on Cold Damage (《伤寒论》, c. 200 CE). Its outline pattern (提纲证, Song art. 1) is a floating pulse, a stiff and painful head and nape, and aversion to cold — the earliest, most exterior stage of externally-contracted disease. A historical pattern-category for reference, not a contemporary diagnostic or treatment guide.
