In Chinese medicine, the heart (xin) is a functional zang system, not the anatomical organ of biomedicine. The Neijing calls it the root of life and the seat of the spirit's changes (心者，生之本，神之變也); its bloom shows in the face, it fills the blood vessels, and it governs the blood and houses the shen.
