A foundational concept of Chinese medicine designating two opposing yet complementary and interdependent aspects into which all things and phenomena can be divided. The Neijing regards yin and yang as the order of heaven and earth, the framework of all things, the parent of change, and the root of generation and destruction; their opposition, mutual rooting, waxing and waning, and inter-transformation explain the body structure, physiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment.
