In the Golden Cabinet (《金匮要略》) tradition, thoracic fluid retention (支饮) is a disease/condition described in the Essential Prescriptions (金匮要略, ch.12) — one of the four phlegm-fluid disorders — by coughing with laboured, propped-up breathing, shortness of breath with an inability to lie flat, and a puffy body shape. A historical disease-category for reference, not a diagnostic or treatment guide.
