In the《Shanghan Lun》tradition, this formula is described for a Shaoyin-stage pattern where, after Baitong Tang was first used, diarrhoea persists with cold reversal of the limbs, an impalpable pulse, dry retching and vexation. The classical text adds that afterwards a suddenly surging pulse was regarded as an ominous sign and a faintly returning one as favourable. A historical indication, not a modern diagnostic or treatment recommendation.
