The Bencao Gangmu records ma dou ling and its vine tian xian teng as "non-toxic." Ma Dou Ling Is "Non-Toxic" in the Classics — and It Is a Source of Aristolochic Acid
A line that should put you at ease
Open the Bencao Gangmu to ma dou ling (the fruit of Aristolochia) and the nature-and-flavor line reads: "bitter, cold, non-toxic" (with Zhen Quan noting it as neutral, and Li Shizhen as slightly bitter and acrid). Turn to its vine, tian xian teng, and the record is the same shape: "bitter, warm, non-toxic."
Non-toxic, both of them. In the classical record there is no asterisk here — no contesting voice, no "greatly toxic" cited a few lines down the way there is for cinnabar. The old texts are calm and of one mind about these two.
If you stopped there, you would file them away as harmless. Don't stop there — because the plant behind the name is one modern medicine has studied very closely, and what it found does not sit on the same page.
The plant behind the name
Read the English names on these entries and the bridge is already visible: ma dou ling is Aristolochia fruit; tian xian teng is Aristolochia vine. They belong to the genus Aristolochia — and Aristolochia plants contain aristolochic acid.
That is a botanical fact, not an interpretation, in the same way that cinnabar being mercuric sulfide is a fact. The classical authors named and used the plant; they could not have named the compound inside it, because the tools to isolate or even conceive of it did not exist for centuries after.
Modern science adds a voice the classics couldn't
On aristolochic acid, the modern record is unusually specific and, unlike many such cases, unusually consistent:
- The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies aristolochic acid as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) — its highest category, reserved for agents with sufficient evidence of cancer in people (IARC Monographs, Volume 100A).
- The U.S. National Toxicology Program lists aristolochic acids in its Report on Carcinogens as "known to be human carcinogens, based on sufficient evidence ... from studies in humans."
- The harm has a name — aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN) — a progressive kidney scarring that can end in kidney failure, frequently followed by cancer of the upper urinary tract.
This is not a single laboratory result. It is built on people:
- In Belgium in the 1990s, more than a hundred women developed rapidly progressive kidney failure after a weight-loss regimen that included an Aristolochia herb; a large share later developed urinary-tract cancer (reported by Vanherweghem and colleagues in the Lancet, 1993, and Nortier and colleagues in the New England Journal of Medicine, 2000).
- In Taiwan, which has the highest rate of upper-urinary-tract urothelial cancer reported anywhere, a 2012 study (Chen and colleagues, PNAS) found the distinctive aristolochic-acid molecular signature — a specific mutation pattern and DNA adducts — in the large majority of those tumors.
Regulators have acted on this. The U.S. FDA issued a consumer alert in 2001 and an import alert to detain aristolochic-acid-containing botanicals. And notably, China itself banned several aristolochic-acid-containing herbs — guan mu tong, guang fang ji, qing mu xiang — in 2003–2004, and the Chinese Pharmacopoeia removed related entries.
Note what this paragraph is and isn't. It transcribes what modern authorities record about aristolochic acid — the compound, and the Aristolochia plants it comes from. It is not a prescription. We are not telling you what to do; we are recording, with sources, what modern research has found.
Why the classics could never have known
It would be easy, and wrong, to read all this as the old texts being careless. They weren't. They were working with a different generation of tools.
Judging a substance "non-toxic" by classical means meant watching what it did to a person within the span a person could observe — a day, a season, a life. Aristolochic acid does its worst damage on a timescale that observation alone cannot connect: kidney fibrosis builds quietly, and the cancers can surface years to decades after exposure. Linking a slow cancer back to a herb taken long before requires chemistry to isolate the compound, animal studies, and population-scale epidemiology — none of which existed when the Bencao Gangmu was written.
So "non-toxic" was an honest reading of the evidence available then. The modern verdict is a different reading, from instruments the classical authors never had. This is a gap between cognitive tools across centuries, not a mistake by people who lacked them.
